On December 18, 2013, a drop in the price of Bitcoin prompted a member of the bitcointalk forum to write that he would not sell his Bitcoin. The drunk user mistyped and accidentally changed “I AM HOLDING” to “I AM HODLING”, which has since become established in the community.
